النفي يسهل في اللغة الإنجليزية – نضيف كلمة “not” (مش) قبل الفعل الرئيسي في الجملة للأفعال في الزمن المضارع التقدمي والمستقبل. إذا كان الزمن مضارعًا، نستخدم “do/does not” قبل الفعل. إذا كان الزمن ماضيًا، نستخدم “did not” قبل الفعل.

Negation is fairly easy in English – we insert the word not (مش) before the main verb or verbs in the sentence for the present progressive and future forms. If the tense is present, we use do/does not before the verb. If the tense is past, we use did not before the verb.

Present tense

I do not work at the market.

Present progressive tense

right now; tells about current state

I am working at the market.

I am not working at the market

أنا شغال في السوق.

ما عم بشتغل في السوق

Future tense

it Will Happen Soon

المستقبل

في المستقبل

I will work at the market tonight.

I will not work at the market tonight.

OR: I am not going to work at the market tonight.

رح اشتغل في السوق الليلة.

ما رح بشتغل في السوق الليلة

Past tense

it Happened

Add -ed or -d to the end of the verb to make it past tense.

الماضي

في الماضي

أضف -ed أو -d في نهاية الفعل لجعله في الماضي.

I worked at the market yesterday.

I did not work at the market yesterday.

شغلت في السوق بالأمس

ما شتغلت في السوق بالأمس

Clean (present progressive tense) I am not cleaning the house today. You are not cleaning my mess. She is not cleaning her room. We are not cleaning until later. They are not cleaning the fish tanks.	بنظّف (الزمن المضارع التقدمي) ما بنظّف البيت اليوم. ما بتنظّف فوضاي. هي ما بتنظّف غرفتها. إحنا ما بنظّف حتى لاحقًا. هم ما بينظّفوا خزانات الأسماك.
Sleep (future tense) I will not sleep tonight. You will not sleep at their house. He will not sleep on his bed. We will not sleep until 2am. They will not sleep well tonight.	نام (المستقبل) ما رح نام الليلة. ما رح تنام عند بيتهم. هو ما رح ينام على سريره. إحنا ما رح ننام حتى الساعة ٢ صباحًا. هم ما رح يناموا كويس الليلة.
Drive (past tense) I did not drive the car yesterday. You did not drive to Hebron, right? She did not drive her brother to school. We did not drive to town. They did not drive last night.	سوق (الماضي) ما قد سوقت السيارة بالأمس. ما سوقت إلى الخليل، صح؟ هي ما سوقت أخوها للمدرسة. إحنا ما سوقنا للبلد. هم ما سوقوا الليلة الماضية.
