To become fluent in another language, you must be immersed in the new language. The way we speak does not exactly match the way we write. Rules of grammar are relaxed, and the sounds of the words blend together. Luckily, we can also look at hand gestures and expressions to get more information.

The goal is not to understand or hear every single word. The goal is just to know generally what is happening and to respond appropriately.

In this scene, Riley and Lizzie are sitting in the waiting room of the hospital. Their father has fallen from a ladder and injured his leg. Riley is reflecting on his actions and blaming himself for allowing his father to do dangerous work. He is also explaining that he felt more important when he was in the military. Lizzie is listening to him and giving him advice.

This is my fault. Never should have let him go up there. 1 هاي غلطتي. ما كان يجب ان اسمح له يروح هناك.
Like you could have stopped him. 2 يعني ما كنتش تقدر توقفو.
He’s a piece of work, huh? … Remember when we rushed him to the ER to get his thumb sewed back on? 3 هو شغل فني، صح؟ … هل تتذكر عندما أسرعنا به إلى غرفة الطوارئ لإعادة خياطة إصبعه
After they wheeled him out of the operating room I asked him how he was doing and he went, “GREAT!” 4 لما كانوا عم ينزلوا برا العملية، سألتو كيف حالو، قال “تمام!”
You know, he’s still on me to go to work for him. 5 يعني لسا عم يضغط علي برضو إنو أشتغل معو.
So why don’t you? 6 فلو شو ما بتشتغل؟
I don’t know. 7 ما بعرف.
Boy, that is feeble. 8 يا ريت، هيك بسيط؟
It’s hard to explain. 9 صعب شوية أفسر.
I got no where to be… 10 أنا ما عندي لازمة…
When I was in uniform, I felt like I was doing something important … You know, taking care of my guys, helping the locals … 11 لما كنت بالزي، كنت حاسس حالي عم بعمل شي مهم… يعني، عم بعتني في رفاقي، بساعد الناس المحليين…
Yeah, okay… 12 أه، تيّب…
So it’s hard going from all that to fixing kitchen counters every day. 13 فبصراحة، صعب يتحول من هالشغل لتصليح المطابخ كل يوم.
It doesn’t have to be forever. I mean, think of it like your marriage … 14 ما لازم يكون للأبد. يعني، فكر فيها مثل الزواج…
Thanks, sis. 15 شكراً، أختي.
Riley, I’m not trying to tell you how to live your life. 16 رايلي، مش حاولة أديرلك حياتك.
Sure about that? 17 متأكدة من هيك؟
You’re an adult man who’s sleeping on a couch in his father’s garage … maybe be open to taking advice. 18 أنت راجل كبير نايم على كنبة بغرفة الأب… ربما تكون مستعد لقبول نصيحة.

Notes ملاحظات

السطر 1، رايلي: “Never should have let him go up there.”

  • الكلمة “أنا” ناقصة. هذا شائع في الإنجليزية المنطوقة عندما تبدأ الجملة.
  • “Never” هو العكس من “always”.
  • رايلي يعبر عن أنه لا ينبغي أن يسمح لوالده بالذهاب إلى السطح لأنه كان خطيراً.

السطر 3، رايلي: “He’s a piece of work.”

  • “Piece of work” هو تعبير شائع.
  • يعني أن الشخص معقول أو يستحق الإعجاب، ولكن يمكن استخدامه بسخرية ليعني أن الشخص معقد أو صعب الفهم أو مجنون.
  • في هذه الحالة، رايلي ربما يقصد أن والده عنيد ولو جرب رايلي منعه لكان قد ذهب على السلم على أي حال.
  • أصل هذا التعبير ربما جاء من التعبير “a work of art”.

السطر 4، ليزي: “He went, ‘Great!’”

  • في الإنجليزية المنطوقة، نغير كلمة “to say” إلى “to go”.
  • هذه الجملة ينبغي أن تكون: “He said, ‘Great!’”
  • ستسمع هذا عندما يخبرك شخص ما بما قاله شخص آخر في وقت آخر.

السطر 5، رايلي: “He is still on me to go to work for him.”

  • رايلي يعني أن والده يضغط عليه.
  • مثال: “My mother is on me to clean my room.”

السطر 8، ليزي: “Boy, that is feeble.”

I got nowhere to be”

  • هذا تعبير يمكن أن تقوليه لدعوة الشخص الآخر ليأخذ وقته.
  • ليزي تشير إلى أنها ليست لديها خطط. رايلي يمكن أن يتحدث بقدر ما يريد.
  • العكس من هذا التعبير هو “I have somewhere to be” – هذا يعني أن ليس لديك وقت. عليك أن تذهب قريباً.

السطر 15، رايلي: “Thanks, sis.”

  • “Sis” هو اختصار لـ “sister”.
  • تقول هذا فقط لأصدقاء وعائلة قريبة.
  • يمكن أن يقول أصدقاء مقربين هذا حتى لو لم يكونوا من نفس العائلة. يعني أنهم قريبون مثل الأخت.
  • النسخة الذكرية من هذا هو bro الذي هو اختصار لكلمة brother.

السطر 17، رايلي: “Sure about that?”

  • رايلي ترك الكلمات “Are you”.
  • الجملة الكاملة هي “Are you sure about that؟”
  • من الشائع حذف الضمير وأحيانا الفعل “to be” في بداية الجملة.
  • Line 1, Riley: “Never should have let him go up there.”
    • The word for “I” is missing. This is common in spoken English when it begins the sentence.
    • “Never” is the opposite of “always”
    • Riley is expressing that he should not have allowed his father to go up on the roof because it was dangerous.
  • Line 3, Riley: “He’s a piece of work.”
    • “Piece of work” is an idiom.
    • It means that a person is impressive or worthy of admiration, but it can be used sarcastically to mean the person is complex, difficult to understand, or crazy.
    • In this case, Riley probably meant that his father is stubborn and would have gone on the ladder even if Riley tried to stop him.
    • The origin of this idiom probably came from the expression “a work of art.”
  • Line 4, Lizzie: “He went, ‘Great!’”
    • In spoken English, we often replace the word “to say” with “to go”
    • This sentence should really be: “He said, ‘Great!’”
    • You will hear this when someone is telling you what someone else said at another time.
  • Line 5, Riley: “He is still on me to go to work for him.”
    • Riley means that his father is putting pressure on him.
    • Example: “My mother is on me to clean my room.”
  • Line 8, Lizzie: “Boy, that is feeble.”
    • “Boy” and “God” and “Man” are often used at the beginning of a sentence to indicate interest or despair in the same way that you might say “Ya Allah” at the beginning of a sentence in Arabic.
    • “Feeble” is another word for “weak”
    • Lizzie is telling Riley that what he just said is weak. It lacks any meaning. She is challenging Riley to say more about his feelings.
  • Line 10, Lizzie: “I got nowhere to be”
    • This is an expression you can say to invite the other person to take their time.
    • Lizzie is indicating that she has no plans. Riley can talk as much as he wants.
    • The opposite of this expression is “I have somewhere to be” – this means that you don’t have time. You need to go soon.
  • Line 15, Riley: “Thanks, sis.”
    • Sis is short for sister
    • You only say this to close friends and family
    • Close friends can say this even if they are not from the same family. It means they are close like a sister.
    • The male version of this is bro which is short for brother
  • Line 17, Riley: “Sure about that?”
    • Riley left out the words “Are you”
    • The full sentence is “Are you sure about that?”
    • It is common to omit the pronoun and sometimes the verb “to be” at the beginning of a sentence.
